How we started

Capsicum Culinary Studio was founded by Cheryl Nesbitt, a qualified Hotel Manager and experienced member of the Culinary Industry. Cheryl studied Hotel Management at the Witwatersrand Hotel School in Johannesburg and gained 8 years of hotel experience. Leaving the Protea Hotel Group in 1991 as a Deputy General Manager, she started Country Catering, an extremely successful Events Management and Catering Company. After 7 years, Cheryl sold the business and ventured into the training world. Cheryl joined Varsity College as their lead lecturer and relocated to Cape Town to head the national Hotel Management Division. Cheryl then joined the International Colleges Group (INTEC and Damelin) in the position of Cape Town Branch Manager, moving up to National Sales Manager and later Business Manager.

After extensive market research, Cheryl discovered there was an unmet need for a reasonably priced, reasonable time committment cooking school. All to often, applicants in South Africa had been disheartened by the number of up-market, exclusively priced cooking schools which effectivley prevented potential students from realising their dreams because of cost or low value to cost, ratios.

Cheryl approached Miranda Haricharan, the Executive Chef for the Legacy Group of Hotels in the Cape Town Waterfront, whom she had studied with at Hotel School, to join her in the formation of an affordable, creative, fun and accredited cooking school she was about to start.

And so, Capsicum Culinary Studio was born!

More recently, John Creighton, a Regional General Manager for the Protea Hotel Group, joined Cheryl and Miranda in the operation of the now expanding Capsicum Culinary Studio Group.

Capsicum Culinary Studios vision is to teach the art of culinary excellence through high-quality yet affordable education and training, to enable individuals to achieve their goals.

Capsicum Culinary Studios core purpose is to fill a market gap for an affordable accredited education that measures its success by the success of its students in the industry.
