FGASA - Field Guides Association of Southern Africa
Africa Nature Training is South Africa's
leading nature training organisation. Our courses are designed for all nature
enthusiasts and prospective field guides and are highly regarded for their
professional content, structure and presentation.
Our goal is to equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge about
our natural environment, thereby opening their minds to its magic and
extraordinary diversity. At the end of any of our training we aim to have
changed the way people see the world around them.
Our flagship is the thrilling seven month-long part-time Nature
Enthusiast Course, based in Johannesburg. This course is presented by a team of
expert lecturers and highly experienced field guides who act as mentors. For
those of you who live outside Gauteng, you can gain the knowledge in the
comfort of your home via our (distance learning) Correspondence Course. We currently offer a two week practical session once a year so that students can experience the wonders
of the South African bushveld at our bush camp.
If these courses do not suit your needs or situation, then we also have a two-month-long FGASA Level 1 Course where students study full-time at our training camp in the Greater Kruger National Park (south-western section). We also have a month-long Back-up Trails Guide course as well as week-long contact sessions for those who want to take their guiding career to the next level or who just want to experience nature’s glory on foot.
Finally, for the aspiring birders out there, we have an exciting Savanna Bird Course, specially tailored for
you! This goes hand-in-hand with FGASA Level 2 since it is an elective for the
qualification as well a mandatory requirement for FGASA Level
3.
Our courses’ syllabuses are aligned with that of the Field Guides
Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). On successful completion of a course
students are well equipped to write the independent entry level FGASA Level 1
or Trails Guide exam. These syllabuses are also aligned with the Unit
Standards of the NQF Nature Site Guide Skills Programme.
