The school was founded in 2008 and is based in Kensington, Johannesburg.
During 2008 Johnathan was invited by one of the departments of the University of South Africa to compile a photography course for beginners in digital photography to present as in-house training for lecturers. Based on this first course, Johnathan has developed the different training programmes available on this website.
Since inception of the school, the courses have developed tremendously and now takes a beginner photographer all the way to advanced photographic application. The aim is to inspire creativity and develop talent.
The courses are designed to equip students with theory, practical information, tips and techniques that are both aimed at starting students out in digital photography as well as providing a platform for taking creative control of digital photography.
An exciting development in 2011 is the launch phase one of a course in cinematography! As a pilot for the course, we have teamed with UNISA to make available a first version of the course under their A Chance To Advance initiative. The course is a 7 day introduction to cinematography. During the programme we deal with theoretical aspects of working with video as well as digital photographs, lighting, sound, directing and video editing.
The unique training programmes offered at JASP combines theory with practical application. This means that not only will students learn in the classroom, but the newly acquired knowledge and skills will be applied in‐the‐field.
Group sizes are usually limited to approximately 10 people to ensure that there is enough time for some one-on-one attention.
Private training sessions can also be booked for small groups and individuals.
Since inception of the school, Johnathan has had the privilege of providing training to more than 400 students!
JASP has developed an internship programme for students who wish to gain experience in shooting photographic assignments for clients and editorial work.
Interns carry out photographic work on assignment as well as compile photographic features for the j2u magazine - a magazine published by the JAGroup.
