The Swiss Hotel School, South Africa has since its inception delivered a programme developed, tried and tested in top Swiss Hotel Schools and recognized worldwide by the hotel sector. Onward study to degree level at such schools is a real option for its graduates. With regards to employability, graduates have been singularly successful in gaining good entry positions with quality employers both home and abroad.

The Schools 3 year diploma is aligned with two qualifications registered on the National Qualification Framework; specifically the National Certificate in Professional Cookery and the Diploma in Hospitality Operations. Programme design centers on specified outcomes and unit assessment.

Where courses or units taught lie outside the ambit of THETA (Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority), e.g. foreign languages, first aid and wine knowledge, course content is aligned with standards set by the recognized subject authority and students are encouraged to challenge the external examination.

In September 2006 The School was granted Provisional Accreditation by Umalusi, the appointed quality assurer for Department of Education, Further Education and Training. (FET00504PA) This accreditation is valid for three years during which time the regulations for full accreditation will be agreed by the Minister. The School management is committed to gaining full accreditation at the first possible moment.

In anticipation of full accreditation management has opened dialogue with local universities to provide future graduates with the opportunity to continue study to degree level.


The Swiss Hotel School in Randburg opened its doors in 1995. The curriculum and educational philosophy was modeled on that of the Hotel School Belvoirpark in Zurich where the founder, Jurg Vontobel had been Director for 10 years.

Enrolling small numbers of students each year the school quickly found favour with the Johannesburg hotel industry for the competence and can-do attitude of its students. Returning each year to his native Switzerland, Vontobel was able to maintain the currency of the educational offering adding elements and refinements each year. Through maintaining his contacts with Swiss Hoteliers and immigration authorities he was also able to establish work placement opportunities for second year students.

Different from local schools the SHS programme offered high levels of faculty attention through more classroom hours, small groups, good practical facilities and strong general education component through such subjects as life skills and communications, foreign languages, music culture and psychology.

Graduates of the School have been singularly successful in securing career opportunities both locally and overseas and form a growing reference group for new students.

In January 2005 leadership of the School passed to Nicholas S Martin whose experience in the international hospitality industry and commitment to providing world class hospitality education ensures that the School will continue to meet the needs of each generation of new students and the industry it serves.

By January 2006 the original 2 year diploma was aligned with the National Qualification Framework (NQF) and re-launched as a three year programme. In September of the same year the School was provisionally accredited by Umalusi, the appointed quality assurer of the Department of Education, Further Education and Training. (see Accreditation)

In June 2007 the School moved to spacious new premises down the road in Ferndale which offer enhanced practical training facilities, spacious teaching and recreation areas and first class secure parking.
